I learned that not every staircase is photogenic and it may take multiple tries to find the perfect building with the perfect staircase

Magazines part 2

Image based magazine covers mainly consist of a person or celebrity and are usually taken while the person is smiling and/ or posing for the picture. Illustration based magazine covers are drawn an illustrated by an artist or computer generator. Type based magazine covers draw the reader in using powerful words. These are covers without large pictures and illustrations but rather words to convey a certain message to the reader. Concept based covers are another way to convey powerful and important messages. This type of cover can be a combination or blend of some or all of the other types. They must be easy to understand without directly stating the message you are trying to get across to readers.

The relationship between words and photos on magazines are what truly conveys the message to a reader and is very important to help explain what is happening and what they will be reading about in your magazine.

My favorite cover

Allure
“The Beauty of Diversity,” April 2017
Patrick Demarchelier, Photographer
"The beauty and fashion industries have been too white for too long. By celebrating a range of underrepresented skin tones on our cover, it was our hope to move the needle in the beauty world, to redefine what beauty means. It’s vital to acknowledge that there is no one definition of beauty—and here at Allure, we are overdue. The response was overwhelming: both long-time readers and women who had never connected with Allure before told us how much our April issue meant to them. The needle, in a meaningful way, had moved."

I think this cover is absolutely stunning. It is empowering and moving for women of color. This cover shows is very diverse and showcases beauty in a different way than what we are used to seeing. All three women captured in this photo are gorgeous in their own way but one thing they have in common is a look of confidence which is truly beautiful. Each one looks very strong and rather passionate when it comes to changing beauty standards. I think this magazine cover is very eye opening and displays the way beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and colors. I think the message being conveyed through this photo is powerful and will hopefully change the way beauty and fashion industries perceive beauty.

Magazine tips

Things to think about while making my magazine cover:

1. What do I want to get across to the viewers?
2. How can I get that message across clearly?
3. How can I appeal to the viewers?
4. What kind of things can I edit while keeping it ethical?
5. How can I capture the viewers eye?

Portraits

Tip 1: Don't be shy. If you approach people in the right way, they'll usually be happy to have their picture made. It's up to you to break the ice and get them to cooperate. Joke around with them. Tell them why you want to make the picture. Practice with people you know so that you are comfortable; people can sense when you aren't.

Tip 2:
A self-portrait doesn't have to be of your face—the image of two hands holding a camera says a lot about the photographer who shot his own portrait. You can also aim the camera down your body from eye level. I once took a photo of my own feet in hiking shoes, hanging over the edge of a rocky outcropping in a scenic spot (if you try something like this, just make sure you're in a safe place that you won't fall from). A picture like this will say a lot about your activities and surroundings.

Environmental portraits:

I chose these photos because they are both stunning and were taken very well.
Both subjects look happy and proud to be photographed doing what they do best. It tells the people observing the photos a lot about the people in the photos.

Photography self portraits:

I liked both of these photos mainly because of their creativity. I think both are incredible and well taken.

Casual Portraits:

I chose these portraits because most of the casual portraits I saw were pretty dull but these two stood out. They're both very clear and the subject stands out in both.

I will most likely be taking pictures of my sister and I. Foe me I will probable take the photos outdoors because i love nature. For the portraits of my sister i will most likely take them in a volleyball court because she plays volleyball. I will use the rule of thirds for at least a few photos because I really like that balance. I may uses some props as well to add to the portraits.
